MRI, Labs, & Genetic Testing (Oh My!)

My MRI is Wednesday, September 12, 8 AM.

Yep... 8 AM.

No they didn't ask me what time would work best... I was phoned and told that my MRI is at 8 AM. I guess they didn't realize second shift and early mornings do not work well together. If I went to bed when I got home from work, I could get about 6 hours of sleep. Only, I won't be wound down enough to even think of sleep for a couple hours, at a minimum.

Thank God for Starbucks. :)

The plan for the day will be MRI and the assorted other tests, blood draws, and whatnot at the hospital followed by a stop at the surgeon's office to do the genetic test. From what I was told, it's basically a mouthwash (officially, a buccal rinse). A simple rinse & spit. Something so simple has to have some unpleasantness... my guess is that it doesn't taste fresh & minty.

Tentatively, surgery has been scheduled for the following week on September 19. However, I've recently learned that there have been many diagnosed with cancer in my paternal grandfather's family and he also died from cancer. I always thought it was lung or liver cancer but I could be remembering incorrectly. So perhaps the surgery should be postponed until after the genetic testing has been completed, as that will take two weeks.

The genetic test looks for a mutation in a couple genes that have been shown to have a link to breast or ovarian cancers (among others). The BRCA mutation means a person is at a significantly higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer or having a reoccurrence if they had already been diagnosed. If either of the BRCA mutations are present, the treatment plan for me changes somewhat. It also means that family members should be tested for the mutation.

Love & Hugs
